Cricket fans were treated to several interesting matches, when the Guyana Softball League, in collaboration with Mike’s Pharmacy staged the National 15 overs Softball Cricket Competition.
In action witnessed on Saturday last, teams zoned in the West Coast group competed for honours at the Uitvlugt Community Centre Ground. The first match got underway at 13:00hrs and pitted Uitvlugt Youths against Zeeburg Youths XI.
In the end Uitvlugt Youths prevailed by 12 runs, after batting first and scored 93 all out from 9.1 overs. Anil Bidhan with an unbeaten 27 runs and Ameer Azin (27) were the principal scorers.
Zeeburg Youths could only amass 81 in 9.3 overs, in a losing effort. Michael Mathura (18) top scored for the winners, while Mohamed Eshack and Arshad Azim shared the bowling honours with 3-14 from 2 overs and 3-17, also from 2 overs, respectively.
At the same venue, Superstreet Juniors batted first and amassed 73 runs in 8 overs against Leonora Youths. Zameer Khan top scored with 13. In reply, Leonora Youths were bowled out for 65 in 8.1 overs. Dane Anderson (15), top scored for the losers, while Nicholas Shivkumar was their best bowler with 3-6 from 2 overs.
Play continued into the afternoon with the Zeeburg Youths, playing their second game and amassing 163-2 in 10 overs. They then bowled out Ruimzeight Juniors for 28 runs in 7 overs, to win by 135 runs. Kaynotan Joseph scored 103 runs for the winners with support from Michael Mathura, who took 5-4 from 2 overs.
In play at the Christianburg Ground, Linden, Cara Cara Juniors defeated Uprising Youths by 6 wickets. Uprising Youths batted first and scored 42-8 in 10 overs. Ronald Da Silva topped with 15, while Devon Grant was the chief wicket taker with 4-6 from 1.3 overs.
Cara Cara Juniors made light work of the total and reached 43-4 in just 4.3 overs. Devon Grant scored 28 to top the batting, while Shurlon Stenny bowled spectacularly to end with 3-15 from 2 overs.
At the Bayrock Ground, also in Linden, Sunrise Juniors defeated Victory Valley Kings by 7 wickets. Victory Valley Kings batted first and made 70-5 from 10 overs with Ronald Fraser (20), while Earl Cornelius shone with the ball. He took 2-15 from 2 overs. Sunrise Juniors then knocked off the paltry total, amassing 74-3 in 5.5 overs. Top scorer was Marvin Jeffery 27, while Mark Mc Donald (2-20 from 2 overs) was the best bowler.
In another Linden match, Christiansburg All Stars defeated Section “B” Warriors by 40 runs. All Stars batted first and rattled up 127-6 in 10 overs. Curt Cuffy (53) top scored, while Marvin Vencher (2-20 from 2 overs) was the best bowler. When Warriors batted they could only muster 87-9 from 10 overs. Norbert Sunclutte (27) scored the most runs, while Ronald Allicock took 3-19 from 2 overs to top the bowling averages.
Later in the day, Genesis defeated Victory Valley Kings by 53 runs. Genesis amassed 138-7 in 10 overs on the back of Raphael Campbell’s 40. Mark Mc Donald 3-25 from 2 overs was the best bowler. Kings were then toppled for 85 in 9.5 overs. Mark Mc Donald (33) was the best batsman, while Orlando Affius took 2-12 from 2 overs to capture the batting honours.
West Watooka SC then demolished Mighty Risers XI by a massive 155 runs. They scored 214-1 in 10 overs with James Fortune (114) being the best batsman. Mighty Risers were then bowled out for 59 in 7. Keith Daniels valiant contribution of 19, failed to save Mighty risers. Shawn Davidson’s 4-18 from 2 overs was the best bowling figures.
The females also competed for honours for the Wellwoman Trophy. At the Christianburg Ground, Sunrise SC beat West Watooka by 116 runs.
The winners amassed 183-6 in 10 overs after contributions by Alicia Stellingburg, who lashed 66 and Sheneeza Forsythe who took 2-21 from 2 overs. In reply West Watooka SC made 67–5 in 10 overs. Shondell Forsythe (40) was the best batter, while Alicia Stellingburg with 2-11 from 2 overs, was the best bowler. Blue Berry Hill United then defeated Uprising by 9 wickets.
They made 53-7 in 10 overs after Wendy De Young lashed 16. Anita Benjamin supported with 4-10 from 2 overs. In reply Blue Berry Hill United made 54-1 in 4 overs. Robin Boeing contributed 27 of those runs.
In another exciting match, Christianburg All Stars beat Genesis SC by 21 runs. Batting first, All Stars made 107–6 in 10 overs. Juliana Allicock (55) top scored, while Patricia Tello (3-24 from 2 overs) was the best bowler. When Genesis SC batted they managed just 86-9 in 10 overs. Allison Duncan 26 top scored, while Greyslin Gittens 4-2 from 2 overs was the best bowler.
Players also battled in the Over-40 Category for the Wellman Trophy. In matches played in the Demerara Zone on Friday last, Rangers Masters defeated Floodlight XI by 6 wickets.
Floodlight XI lost the toss and were invited to take first strike. Ricky Deonarine (74) was the top batsman and helped his team to a total of 217 -9 in 25 overs. He received support from Amarnauth Boodhoo (44). Bowling, Mohamed Saffie (4-30 from 5 overs) and Rambharose Beharry (3- 23 from 5 overs) were the best.
Rangers Masters then cruised to 221-4 in 19.4 overs. Shafeek Mohamed contributed an unbeaten 60 with support from Younis Mohamed, also unbeaten on 44. Dharam Persaud 2- 21 from 5 overs and Lakeram Singh 2 – 35 from 5 overs were the chief bowlers.
In matches played on Sunday, Savage XI defeated Industry Super Kings XI by 5 wickets. Super Kings XI batted first and scored 134 all out in 24.2 overs. Thakurdeen Rampersaud (52) top scored, while Talesh Ramotar 3-18 from 3.1 overs was the pick of the bowlers.
Mark Fung took 2- 21 from 5 overs. In reply Savage XI made 140-5 in 20.1 overs. Nadir Baskh lashed 44 with support from Navin Heeralall (42).
