…but remains unbeaten in Ireland
Aliann Pompey expressed disappointment over her slowest time this season even though she won the 400m at the International Athletics’ 58th Cork City Sports at the Mardyke in Ireland on Saturday in an elementary meeting.
Pompey, who is continuing her preparations for the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Track and Field Championships in August, ran 52.31 seconds, which was her first time above 52 seconds.
United States of America’s Latosha Wallace and Jamaica’s Clora Williams ended second and third respectively with 53.02 and 53.06 times. Pompey had run sub-52 times, with her best being 51.09 in Brazil this season.
“I won by a large margin, but I was very unhappy with the time. The wind was gusting up to 5.5 (m/s headwind) during our race. I was hoping to go through the season and not see a 52 next to my name,” Pompey told Kaieteur Sport.
“I am disappointed. I am still in great shape, and I still have a lot to do before Berlin. So I’m just going to shake this off and move on,” she continued via email. The IAAF World Championships will be held in Berlin, Germany.
Pompey was hoping to continue improving her times given the fact that she is likely to go against United States’ Sanya Richards for example, who has the world leading time with 49.23 at the IAAF Golden League Meeting in Oslo. (Edison Jefford)
