Another bizarre boat mishap in the Pomeroon River has claimed the life of an 11-year old boy.
Leon Abrams, of Teneze Ferne, Lower Pomeroon, was pronounced dead at the Charity Hospital after he was struck by the foot of a 200-horsepower outboard engine that had come into contact with a fallen log in the river.
Abrams was one of the many passengers in a boat traveling from Moruca to Charity when the tragedy struck about 06:30 hours yesterday.
Abrams’s older brother, 17-year-old Ralph, was also critically injured and had to be air-dashed to the city and receiving initial treatment at the Charity Hospital.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that Abrams was heading back home after spending the weekend with relatives at Moruca.
A source said that the boat was full and at the time of the mishap it was raining heavily.
During the journey, the boat came into contact with a log from a tree, which had fallen across the river.
Because it was submerged in the water, the captain of the boat, Clifford Henry, did not see it, the other passengers said.
As a result, the foot of the engine crashed into the log causing it to spin upwards and crush the skull of the 11-year old.
His brother, who was sitting next to him, sustained cuts to his neck and back.
The body of Leon Abrams is at the Charity Hospital mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination.
