Arrest GDF 2-1, Pele overwhelm Flamingo 8-0
Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United, on the back of a 4th minute effort off the boot of Edison Gomes and Howard Lowe 32nd minute strike, triumphed over the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 2-1, when play in the Georgetown Football Association/Cellink Premier League continued at the Tucville Ground, Sunday evening last.
The GDF pulled one back through a 47th minute goal from Dorian Agard, but just could not find the right combination to complete the task. Defending champions Alpha, now with 21 points, consolidate their lead in the tournament, while the Army remain on 15 points and slipped to third place. Camptown, on 18 points occupy second position.
While all three goals were scored in the first half, ironically, it was the second half that had the fans screaming in delight. In an especially entertaining play, midfielder, Gavin Wilson collected a superb pass from one of his teammates and charged to the Alpha goal. It would have been the play of the night had he been successful in the conversion.
However, Alpha’s custodian, Ronson Williams gleefully scooped up his tame strike, thus denying what would have been a great goal.
Dorian Agard, who was having an especially good game, managed to get past Alpha’s defence line but his poorly timed strike flew over the crossbar.
Employing robust tactics, the Army upped the ante and relentlessly stormed the opposition’s goal only to botch their chances with poor finishing. One such play was witnessed when soldier, Warren Gilkes, demonstrating superb ball control, thundered down the left wing, well within the opposition’s goal, but badly placed to complete the conversion, he entrusted the shot to his colleague who could only muster a tame strike, into the hands of the Alpha custodian.
As the action continued, tempers flared and after one encounter, Dwayne Jacobs received marching orders, after the referee heard him using expletives on the field. As the minutes to the final whistle ticked away, Gavin Wilson attempted a last ditch effort to equalise for the GDF. He dribbled past Alpha’s defence and slammed a powerful strike to their goal. Maybe on any other night his effort might have paid dividends, but the alert Alpha keeper (Williams) once again denied him with excellent ‘keeping.’
The final whistle shortly afterwards sent ‘The Hammers’ into jubilation, while the soldiers made an ignominious retreat.
Earlier in the night, Pele pounded Flamingo 8-nil in a predictable affair. The Flamingoes seem to be the tournament’s whipping boys and Pele did not waste the opportunity to improve on their aggregate and points standing.
Marvin Joseph led the onslaught with strikes in the 26th, 34th, 54th and 59th minutes, while Okeny Fraser contributed a double in the 75th and 86th minutes. Travis Grant and Gerald Whittington completed the onslaught with goals in the 40th and 92nd minutes, respectively.
Play in the tournament continues Friday at the same venue.
