Thirty-one Karatekas, from two clubs were evaluated and subsequently promoted to various levels, when the Great Diamond Martial Arts Association hosted a Karate Upgrade Examinations at the Diamond Community Centre, Diamond East Bank Demerara, yesterday afternoon.
The group of Karatekas poses for a photo op with Sensies Ramnarine (extreme right, standing) and Henry (extreme left) shortly after the completion of the grading sessions.
Under the evaluative eyes of their instructors Sensies Lloyd Ramnarine and Edric Henry and with assistance from a senior brown belt, Javed Udai, 10 students between the ages of 7-35 years were promoted from white to yellow belt while six were promoted from yellow to orange.
Three persons with orange belts earned blue belts, while three 6th Kyu green belts have advanced to 5th Kyu purple. Three Kyu brown are now wearing 2nd Kyu brown belts, while six persons formerly adorned with blue belts are now wearing 7th Kyu green.
The students were all required to perform complicated moves in Shoto Kan, Indo and Ju Jitsu before receiving their new statuses. Those graduating from blue to green belts were required to engage in practical as well as the theoretical aspect of the sport.
Sensi Ramnarine explained that this requirement was not applicable to those ranked below the green belt status. He said that it was imperative that Karatekas graduating to the status of green belt would be categorised as senior practitioners and would be required to understand the Japanese language.
He said that the theoretical aspect of the examination was implemented with this objective in mind.
Ramnarine said that he has been involved in the business for close to two decades. He said that he is responsible for the tutelage of the Soesdyke group as well as the one in Diamond EBD.
Training sessions for the East Bank group are conducted on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 16:30hrs-18:30hrs, while those on the Linden Soesdyke Highway train on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 16:30 hrs-18:30hrs.
