The police are trying to locate a 22-year old woman, following the death of her baby, whom she had allegedly taken from the hospital without a doctor’s permission. The nine-month-old boy succumbed yesterday at the Georgetown Hospital Corporation, a day after his mother ignored medical advice and removed him from the institution.
Kaieteur News understands that the woman, accompanied by an aunt, first took the child to the GPHC on Saturday accompanied by an aunt. According to sources, the child is usually left in the aunt’s care during the day, since the mother works.
Sources further told this newspaper that the child’s mother had noticed that the baby was not “feeling well” but refused to take him to a doctor. It was reported that only after the baby’s condition deteriorated, that she decided to take the infant to the hospital.
Doctors in the Accident and Emergency Unit quickly admitted the child and began to treat him for dehydration.
However, against medical advice, the mother allegedly took the infant out of the institution. The child’s father rushed the ailing baby back to the GPHC the following day, where the child was pronounced dead on arrival.
On learning the news, the mother, who had accompanied the child’s father, quickly disappeared from the scene. She has not been seen since.
After realising that his reputed wife had left the hospital, the grieving father went to the Brickdam Police Station and made a report.
A number of hospital sources expressed the view that the mother and the child’s aunt should be charged for child endangerment.
“The mother and aunt should definitely be charged for that child’s death.
Imagine, the doctors told her the severity of the child’s sickness but she still took the child away. She had something to hide”.
The police have since launched an investigation and are asking the mother of the child to turn herself in.
