Letter to be sent to Sports Ministry
By Edison Jefford
The Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club will be sending a document to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport this week highlighting what it believes are several flawed aspects of the administration of basketball in Georgetown.
The club had issued an exclusive statement to Kaieteur Sport last week, in which it stated that the sport is being plundered for personal benefits rather than focusing on sustainable development of players and the sport generally.
The club directly issued its criticism at the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) when it had indicated last week that some officials have “contrived to stymie the efforts of other parties to bring structure to basketball”.
This newspaper has learnt from a source close to the club that a letter highlighting several misdemeanors will be sent to the Sports Ministry following last week’s statement. The idea is to raise awareness of the concern.
The source said that the letter that will be sent to the ministry addresses several issues and was crafted because of “neglect and pilfering” that is occurring in several areas that range from schools’ basketball to the wellbeing of players.
The club believes that individuals are being allowed to “plunder” the sport in the City and its recourse is to address the Sports Ministry after its minister, Dr. Frank Anthony had called for a revival of the national federation last week.
According to the well-informed source, the document will consist of approximately eight points and deals with many neglected areas such as scouting, coaches in schools, clinics and the clichéd mantra of rundown infrastructure.
The informant said that the club wants officials to shed their “individualism” to develop a more unified approach to basketball in Georgetown. As it is, Pepsi Sonics thinks that only a selected few are being empowered in the sport.
When Kaieteur Sport contacted a senior GABA official last week following the release of the statement, the official had no comment but yesterday, Secretary of the sub association Robert Cadogan dismissed the assertions as spurious.
“The GABA doesn’t have the time to get into a slugfest with any club. They [Pepsi Sonics] have an Executive within the GABA, so I don’t know where these are coming from,” he told this newspaper briefly yesterday.
“Our record since we took over speaks for itself. We took over an association with little or no finances and we went out and made it viable,” Cadogan said, before maintaining that the GABA will not be hauled into the “gutter”.
Georgetown is abuzz with basketball and related activities since the new administration was brought to office last September. However, Pepsi Sonics is not satisfied with just the proliferation of the sport but wants more to be done.
