Top seeds Kristian Jeffrey and Nicolette Fernandes marched into the finals of the Men’s and Ladies categories, after registering wins against their respective opponents, as the 2009 GT&T sponsored National Senior Squash Championships continued last Friday night, at the Georgetown Club.
Jeffrey eventually overcame a determined Alex Arjoon in four sets to set up an intriguing clash against the experienced Regan Pollard, who is a former multiple champion, while Fernandes was a straight sets winner against Kayla Jeffrey and will now face the other side of the twin Keisha, who overcame Ashley Khalil in four sets.
The Arjoon versus Jeffrey match-up saw the former surprising defending champion Jeffrey with his tactics of slowing up the game with several lobs and floated drives.
However, his ploys could not prevent Jeffrey from completely dominating the first game and it forced a change of tactics by Arjoon, who broke Jeffrey’s rhythm which saw him commit numerous unforced errors that allowed Arjoon to steal the second game.
In the end, Jeffrey’s superior experience and fitness saw him through to his second consecutive senior final after he grabbed the following two sets with consummate ease to set up a date with Pollard, who ended Nicolette Fernandes’ aspirations of featuring in both finals.
He completed the feat by using his power to force Fernandes on the defensive and the pace of his shots gave her little time to play accurate shots.
The Ladies Final will feature Fernandes against the reigning under-17 Caribbean champion Keisha Jeffrey, who looked sharp in her 3-1 victory against former junior sportswoman Ashley Khalil in their semi-final encounter. She now faces Fernandes in the final which was contested last evening as was the men’s championship match.
