…As Marian reaches both U-15, U-17 finals
The Georgetown Technical Institute and Linden Technical Institute underlined their clear superiority, when they reached the National Schools’ Basketball Festival (NSBF) Under-19 final to be played today at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The Georgetown Institute returned to the final as defending champions after sending home last year’s finalists, President College last Friday, while the Linden institute defeated their hometown rivals, Mackenzie High School. Former national junior guard, Shelroy Thomas will return to the forefront of the schools’ version of basketball for the Georgetown Institute. Thomas had led Kwakwani Secondary to consecutive titles in 2006 and 2007.
He faces his junior national counterpart Orin Rose from the Linden Institute in what will be a definite test of growth and maturity, since their national debut. Both players usually shoot the ball at a very high three-point percentage.
Rose has the highest individual score of the tournament so far with 39 points, as Thomas is a consistent 20-plus offensive player. It will be interesting to note the methods of the teams in combating similar offensive players.
This battle is expected to renew the rivalry of Linden and Georgetown but at the schools’ level. The already glitzy atmosphere of the 2009 NSBF owing to huge corporate support will adequately support this major game.
Meanwhile Marian Academy will play in both the Under-15 and Under-17 final. Marian will oppose Cummings Lodge in the Under-15 final and Kwakwani Secondary in the Under-17 division, with the former scheduled to begin at 4pm.
Marian’s coach, Chris Bowman had told Kaieteur Sport during a tournament earlier this year that he merely needed six months to produce a competitive schools’ basketball team. He will no doubt be pleased with these results.
Sprite, Digicel, Giftland Officemax and Edward B. Beharry & Co. Ltd are among the major sponsors of the event.
