Grade Six top performer…
Anxiety ran through the veins of 11-year-old Sasha Williams, as she waited to collect her results for the National Grade Six Assessment examinations Friday last.
Williams placed fourth over-all with 562 marks, which secured her a position at Queen’s College. She had attended Mae’s Primary.
Like most of her fellow classmates, Williams was definitely looking forward to getting her photograph taken and published in all of the daily newspapers.
However that was not the case; her photograph was only published by the Guyana Chronicle.
Kaieteur News had tried for hours to get Williams’ photograph but was unsuccessful.
Little Sasha and her mother, Karen, visited this newspaper yesterday to inquire why Williams’ photograph was not published.
The child’s mother said that she never blamed the newspaper, but wondered why none of the teachers at the school could have properly informed members of the media who were present about the other students who were placed in the top ten.
She said that her child had studied very hard and deserved that opportunity.
Sasha told this newspaper that she would usually get up early in the mornings and study. She said that she repeated the same thing at nights when she came home from school. The brave 11-year-old said that she is not sure about a future ambition, but knows it might be along the lines of her mother who is realtor.
She attributed her success to her mother and father who worked with her on a daily basis.
According to her mother, Sasha’s father is a former teacher and he took his daughter under his wings in molding her.
When asked about a reward she would be getting from her parents, Sasha smiled. She said, “All I want is an overseas trip that I was promised”.
Larissa Wiltshire who topped the entire country is also a student of Mae’s Under 12.
