The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and B. Shivnath Construction Services on Thursday formally signed the contract for the construction of a hostel and indoor cricket practice facility at the LBI ground – the project costing some $49.5 million.
The signing took place at the GCB Secretariat at Bourda and was witnessed by GCB’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Terry Holder, President Chetram Singh, Vice President Bissoon Singh, Secretary Anand Sanasi, Assistant Secretary Ronald Williams and Assistant Treasurer Parietal Jaigobin.
Chetram Singh informed that the $49.5 million does not include equipment for the indoor practice area like nets and bowling machines and added that 30% of the cost was paid to the contractor at the signing.
Another 40% will he handed over after an evaluation and completion of the super structure while the remaining 30% would be done when the project is completed and handed over to the GCB.
Bridgepaul Shivnath and Priudanmanlall Ramlall represented the construction firm and said the facility should be ready for use by December.
The LBI project, located on East Coast, of Demerara, about 15 minutes outside of the city includes a hostel to accommodate 32 persons, kitchenette, caretaker quarters, gym, an indoor practice area equipped with two artificial pitches, lights and a bowling machine.
Singh says the estimated cost of the entire project is $60 million.
“We are using our share of the money from the last World Cup to complete the facility at LBI and we are putting in two full length 120 feet pitches in the indoor nets, so that the fast bowlers can have a run-up. The indoor nets and lighting will be similar to the one in Trinidad and Tobago at the National Cricket Centre in Cova, but the bowlers’ run up will be longer,” Singh told Kaieteur Sport.
He also informed that the LBI ground is owned by the Guyana Government – adding that the GCB will also have control of the cricket ground and shortly the pitch and ground will be prepared.
“We will have a complete cricket venue with a ground, indoor nets, gym and a hostel and when completed this should be of tremendous value to the pre-tournament perpetration of our national teams,” Singh opined.
Because of the December rainy season Guyana’s first-class team usually leave this country with very little practice for regional tournaments, which start in January, while the same happens with the Guyana Under-19 side, since the regional youth tournaments are played in July and August, just after Guyana’s May/June rainy period.
Singh said he is very optimistic that this significant project will be finally completed, because of the amount of rain in Guyana.
