The sweet talking Diamond man has been remanded to prison, after he allegedly conned a young couple on the Essequibo Coast and is expected back in court sooner that he thinks.
Following a publication of 50-year-old Sohan Kanhai’s picture in the Friday Edition of Kaieteur News, several persons have come forward to the police claiming that the said con man had fleeced them of large amounts of cash.
So far, the police on the Essequibo Coast have received information that Kanhai has similar matters pending in Berbice.
According to a source close to the investigation, the police will now launch an investigation into the fresh claims made by the persons.
Only on Thursday last, Kanhai appeared in the Charity Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with obtaining money by false pretence.
According to a police release, Kanhai travelled to the Coast on June 25, last, and visited Tillcack and Kushnawattie Persaud, a couple at Devonshire Castle whom he pretended to know well.
The report further stated that while a guest of the Persaud family at Devonshire Castle for one week, Kanhai allegedly convinced his hosts that he knew their relatives in the United States.
Kanhai was also reportedly successful in convincing Kushnawattie that he was her brother-in-law whom she did not know. The police also contended that the man convinced the Persauds to loan him $20,000 to rent a room at the Xenon Hotel for one week. He added that he got Kushnawattie to loan the alleged conman $3,000.
According to reports, the man attempted to fleece others but failed to get any money. He will make another appearance at the Anna Regina court on July 7.
