After days of trying to secure funds by encouraging residents to pay up their taxes, the Georgetown municipality was on Friday able to pay its staffers their salaries for the month of June.
The payment has effectively put an end to a sit-in which was instigated by the Guyana Labour Union (GLU) which represents more than 60 percent of the municipal work force.
The staffers had engaged the industrial action based on the union’s instruction after the official pay date had passed without them being paid.
GLU General Secretary, Carvil Duncan, had pointed to the fact that the workers were forced to take action as there was no communication from the administration of the municipality advising of its inability to pay.
However, City Mayor Hamilton Green at a press conference on Tuesday had disclosed that the unions that represent the workers were fully aware of the municipality’s financial dilemma.
He noted, too, at that forum that he was advised by the Treasurer and Town Clerk that the municipality was mobilising enough funds to pay the workers before the end of the week. As a result, he had informed that appeals were being made to property owners, the business community and citizens in general to pay up their outstanding taxes.
The Mayor had also cautioned that those union members who had taken the position to sit-in would in fact not be paid.
The GLU General Secretary had told this newspaper that the union was prepared to advance its action to a full-blown strike if the municipality held to the Mayor’s threat not to pay the workers.
However, Public Relations Officer, Royston King, related on Friday that monies were available for the payment of all workers, adding that by early the same afternoon monies were being sent to the bank.
According to King, the municipality engaged every possible effort to ensure that the 900-odd workers in its employ were paid.
He added that he is thankful for the patience that was exhibited by the workers, pointing out that it is his hope that they will continue to “put their best foot forward” in helping the municipality to fulfil its mandate, despite the many challenges that it faces from time to time.
The City Mayor at the recent press conference had also disclosed that the municipality still owes millions to contractors and has not been able to satisfy the financial arrangements it has with the Polaris Software company to revamp its Information Technology Department.
