Prime Minister of Bahamas, Hubert Ingraham, has revealed that his country is currently experiencing a double digit decline in air arrivals, as is the case with other Caribbean countries as well.
As it relates to the economic downturn and its impact on the Caribbean, Prime Minister Ingraham has said that the worse is not necessarily over as there are suggestions by some that the summer bookings are not looking very strong.
“Generally speaking, I think it is fair to say that most countries in the region are experiencing a double digit decrease in tourists’ arrivals.”
He explained to members of the media on Friday that during the first part of the plenary session held at the International Conference Center with the other Head of States, the establishment of a regional marketing fun was discussed, but an agreement could not be reached as to how countries would contribute to it.
Prime Minister Ingraham noted that several suggestions are on the table and it is expected that a decision would be made soon.
He added that the likely impact of the tax that the UK would impose on travel on the region was also discussed, and that they are currently looking at what steps they can take to have the UK take a second look at the issue.
Meanwhile, The Bahamas has once again refused to host CARIFESTA, and according to Ingraham, his country cannot afford to do it.
“My economy is in decline and I can’t afford to host CARIFESTA or any other major international event at the moment. I need my resources to take care of the requirements of my country,” Prime Minister Ingraham said.
However, The Bahamas will be hosting the Miss Universe Pageant and the FIFA conference this year, but according to Ingraham, the FIFA conference would not cost him a dime, while the Miss Universe Pageant is a promotional exercise for the country which expects to get benefits that will far exceed the US$3 million that the is putting aside for it.
