The respective Farfan & Mendes Under-15 and Pepsi Under-19 cricket teams of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club in association with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Sunday last honoured 70 Fathers under the club’s Self Development Project.
Copping the Father of the Year award was 76 year-old Algenon Lashley of Williamsburg, for the major role he played in the lives of his children and 10 grand children after the passing of his wife in 1988. Lashley continues to make a major impact in the positive development of his grandchildren.
Hilbert Foster, Secretary/CEO of the RHTY&SC at the Special Luncheon hosted by the teams hailed the fathers as true role models, who have set high standards for their children and others to follow.
He also challenged the 70 fathers to play an even bigger part in the lives of youths in the Lower Corentyne area by using their experience to assist them to “Say No to Drugs”, Pre Marital Sex and Crime, while saying “Yes to Education”.
Foster also urged the fathers to promote sports as a healthy alternative to life on the streets.
He complimented the members of both cricket teams for organising the event for the past six years.
Elder Vincent Whitehead of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in his feature address focused on the importance of fatherhood. He explained that there were a huge difference been a father and a dad as every male can be a father but it takes discipline, patience and dedication to be a dad.
He challenged the fathers to get their children closer to God as he is the foundation to happiness.
Eighty-six-year-old Esau Mootoo, a retired headmaster speaking on behalf of the fathers, expressed gratitude to the members of the two teams calling them role models among the youths, who would develop into outstanding cricketers and national leaders. He noted that to be honoured by the youths was a special privilege since their contributions in the past were recognised.
The fathers were treated to a special Luncheon while they also received gifts worth $15, 000 each.
The Farfan & Mendes Under-15 and Pepsi Under-19 cricket teams expressed gratitude to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Demerara Distillers Limited, Ansa McAl Trading Ltd, Guyana Beverage Company, Glen Verapen, Sain’s Supermarket, Charles ‘Jai Jai’ Ram, Poonai’s Pharmacy, Dereck Seetaram, Tyndall Cameron and the St. Francis Community Developers for they assistance in making the event a success.
