Despite loss to Nandalall
DEEP CONCENTRATION: Wendell Meusa contemplates his next move in his losing battle against Nandalall.
Shiv Nandalall created a major upset, defeating tournament favourite Wendell Meusa, when the Sasha Cells Chess Tournament continued at the Keishar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street, Georgetown, Tuesday evening last.
Despite the loss Meusa retained the lead with four points after five rounds by dint of the tie breaker system, ahead of Taffin Khan, also on four points.
The win took Nandalall to 3 1/2 points while Learie Webster and Haatram Parbat have three points apiece.
Irshad Mohamed and Brian Thompson are on two and a half points apiece while David Khan and Ryan Singh have two points each. Errol Tiwari, who has been having a tough time in this tournament, is on one and a half points while Alex Joseph and Omar Shariff are in the cellar on one point apiece.
Meusa, employing his usual strategic stance, looked the sure winner after Nandalall encountered difficulties developing his pieces. Instead of taking advantage Meusa, unfortunately, blundered his Queen, thus allowing Nandalall to secure the victory.
In a father and son encounter, Junior Chess Champion, Taffin Khan needed just forty two moves to prevail over his dad David while veteran player Errol Tiwari, who has been having an atrocious tournament, conceded a victory to Ryan Singh.
The action continued on Thursday’s with Taffin Khan disposing of Nandalall. Khan was especially brutal in this game as he attacked from the very first move and never let up. In the meantime, Meusa made light work of Irshad Mohamed to once again assume the lead while Learie Webster got the better of David Khan. Haatram Parbat then defeated Brian Thompson before Alex Joseph defeated Omar Shariff.
Rashad Hussain, on 3 1/2 points assumed the lead in the junior category over his sibling Aslam, on three points.
Two other players, Sham Khan and Saeed Ali, are also on three points apiece. Sheriffa Ali and Devendra Singh each have 2 1/2 points, while Khalid Gajraj, Carlos Griffith and Alexander Brassington are on two points apiece. Irshad Ishmael is on one and a half while Clive Bender remains in the cellar on one point.
Mandy Ramnarine leads in the beginner’s category followed by her sister Miranda.
The tournament, sponsored exclusively by Sasha Cells, continues Monday at the Keishar’s Sports Club from 9:30am.
