Stephney replaces Manager Johnson for one game in Jamaica
With 11 members who made the trip last year in the squad including Manager Alvin Johnson and Coach Hubern Evans, the 2009 National Under-19 squad yesterday paid a visit to the TCL Plant in Georgetown.
Operational since 2007 in Guyana, TCL plays a massive role in providing quality cement for the construction sector in the Caribbean and Guyana, and their Plant Manager Mark Bender explained the importance of the industry to the youngsters during yesterday’s visit.
The teenagers all equipped with safety helmets, got a first hand look at how the cement is packaged for sale in what has become a regular feature for the team since 2007. TCL is the sponsors of the annual regional Under-19 cricket series and the Guyana team will be leaving next Tuesday for this year’s competition in Jamaica.
“Today (yesterday) the Trinidad and Tobago team is visiting our plant in Trinidad while the Barbados side is also touring the Arawak Cement plant in Barbados,” Bender informed.
This was the team’s last assignment before they concluded their 2-week encampment in the City, breaking camp yesterday afternoon. The players will return to their respective homes and will re-assemble at the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Hostel in Georgetown on Monday to prepare to travel to Jamaica the next day.
The team will leave without Manager Johnson, who has been Manager of the team since 2003. Former Essequibo left-handed batsman Elroy Stephney will perform duties as Manager for the first game in Johnson’s absence before returning home on July 13.
Johnson, who will arrive in Jamaica on July 12, has been given permission to miss the first match to attend the wedding of his eldest daughter Alana Johnson on July 11.
Alana, the first of Johnson’s three children, made a tremendous contribution to local sport as a former award winning TV Sports news presenter on the state owned NCN TV.
And as the players broke camp yesterday, Manager Johnson again stressed that all-rounder Jonathon Foo, in his third year at this level has been barred from participating in a private 20/20 tournament in Berbice tomorrow which has not been sanctioned by the GCB.
“We have made our position clear to Foo and he knows that if he participates, it will be contrary to what he was told by GCB President Chetram Singh before he left for home yesterday” Johnson informed.
TV commercials in Berbice and a preview on the 20/20 competition insisted that Foo was a part of the tournament which will culminate under lights.
The report also stated that a female ‘GT Panters’ side will be involved in the 20/20 competition but President of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Alfred Mentore said he knew nothing about this.
Both the Demerara and Essequibo Cricket Boards have refused to be a part of the event in adherence to the GBC policy not to sanction private 20/20 tournaments.
The Berbice Cricket Board has sanctioned Sunday’s competition.
