Cuba is one win from reaching the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) semi-final playoffs after crushing Bermuda 95-37 when the competition continued on the British Virgin Island (BVI) of Turtola.
Cuba expects a win from the BVI in order to secure a semi-final berth but if the BVI win against Antigua and Barbuda, the former will have the opportunity to play against Cuba for top place in the group with a semi-final spot at stake.
Geoffrei Silvestre netted 16 points and Alexis Lavastida 12 for the Cubans who have a 2-0 record. Cuba shot 33-65 from the field, including 12-30 from three-point range and 17-24 from the free throw line in the win.
The game was decided early as the Cubans started with a 20-2 run in the first six minutes. The first quarter finished 23-7 as Silvestre led with 6 points. The lead increased in the second quarter as the half finished 56-15. The Cuban defence left Bermuda with less than ten points in the first three quarters. Their best offensive quarter was the fourth where they netted 13. Aaron George Jackson scored 14 points and was the only double digit scorer for Bermuda.
Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago remained unbeaten in Group ‘A’ dominating Barbados 90-63 in the third game of second day of the CBC Championship.
Julius Ashby led with 22 points and 11 rebounds while Wilfred Benjamin followed with 17 points and 17 boards with Ian Young adding 17 points for Trinidad, which included four three critical three-pointers.
In a losing effort Zahir Addulsamad Motara had 16 points for Barbados. Jamaica rebounded from their day one loss against Trinidad with a 77-73 win against the Bahamas. Oritseweyinmi Efejuku and centre Kimani Friend both scored with 18 points for Jamaica in the win.
Samardo Samuels and Michael Andre Coburn added 11 points each for the winners. Jamaica won the first quarter 19-14 but Bahamas reacted in the second, finishing with a 13-6 run to take a 44-37 lead at halftime.
Bahamas stayed with the lead in the third quarter, having a twelve point edge (56-44) after two free throws by Alonzo Hinds with 4:11 left. Jamaica finished with a 12-4 run to finish down 60-56.
