….survivors praise fire service
A midday fire of unknown origin, destroyed the bottom flat of a residence at 62 Craig Street, Campbellville, left four homeless and three others giving the fire service praise.
Homeless are 50-year-old Dhanpattie and her huband, Bissioondial Babulal, 46, along with their children Deorishi, 22, and Deoranie, 23.
The fire from all accounts started about 12:30hrs in a room located in the northeastern section of the property. And while a cost could not be attached to the loss, a distraught Deorani said that all her family’s earthly possessions were destroyed.
The family had lived in the bottom flat for about six years and no one was at home at the time of the fire.
Deoranie, an employee of Guyana Energy Authority, said that she had left for work earlier in the day. She said that she just happened to pass by when she noticed intense smoke and neighbours trying to enter the building.
At the time her parents were heading to Berbice. They returned when they got the grim news.
A neighbour east of the gutted house said that he was at home when he heard shouts of ‘fire’ next door and rushed outside to offer assistance. “I tried to use sand to out it but the flames were too much. Thank God the fire service came within 15 minutes of the call or it would have destroyed the whole building.
Daiwantie Khan resides upstairs and was at home at the time of the fire. “I get up to light the stove and started smelling like rubber burning strong and when I look, I see black smoke outside and then I realised that downstairs was on fire so I run out the building,” the 61 year-old said.
She said that because of the fire fighters efforts’ her top flat was saved. The house is owned by her daughter Sabita Khan.
She said “if they didn’t come everything would be burn down but thank God and them for saving the house”. (Mondale Smith)
