Guyana’s youth fast bowler and member of Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC), Seon Daniels was on Tuesday presented with cricket gear by England based MSC members Colwin Cort and Felix Walker.
The 16-year-old pacer, who is set to make his national Under-19 debut next month in Jamaica, received a pair of batting gloves, batting pads, bowling boots, a thigh pad and a pair of cricket pants from Walker, who is in the country to promote his FK Sports cricket equipment.
Cort, a former Guyana Under-19 and senior pacer, could not make the trip home but sent his best wishes to Daniels, the first pacer from the Thomas Lands club since Jeremiah Harris played in 2003.
Daniels, who represented Guyana at both Under-15 and Under-17 levels, is the only MSC player in the Guyana side which leaves for Jamaica on July 7 and MSC President Lance Hinds and Vice President Neil Barry both wished the youth well and thanked Cort and Walker (who played for MSC at the 1st division level in the early 1990s) for their gesture.
Walker told the teenager to go out and make his club and country proud, while club member Edward Richmond who has worked with Daniels’ fitness programme, told him that his club mates were backing him to back himself in Jamaica and urged him to take whatever he is doing seriously at all times.
Another club member, Theresa Pemberton, reminded Daniels that he is leaving Guyana as an ambassador for his country and stressed the need for him to be disciplined at all times both on and off the field.
Arrun Fraser told the gathering that he remembered when Daniels first got into the 2nd division side four years ago and was 12th man for almost an entire season.
“I was the 2nd division captain and Daniels also showed commitment and has improved tremendously since the first joined the club. I committed to the club to take responsibility for Seon’s personal and cricket development and he continues to make us proud. I expect him to do well and get into the West Indies Under-19 team for next year’s youth World Cup in Kenya once he works hard in Jamaica,” Fraser said.
Daniels thanked Cort and Walker for their support and promised to make MSC and his country proud by doing his best at all times both on and off the field in Jamaica.
