Dear Editor,
The just concluded Georgetown District Conference of the People’s National Congress -Reform (PNCR) seems to have been another journey down the road of self-destruction. Those who were responsible for the conduct of the elections for the Executive Officers of the District should hang their heads in shame and do us all a favour by resigning their leadership positions within the Party.
As Winston Murray said the PNCR is the “eye pass of the PPP/C Government” and the conduct of those elections if anything, provided fertile ground for the eye pass to continue.
Two years ago in a bid to maintain the status quo, over 20,000 phantom members were created. The Party has not recovered from that fraud perpetrated on the membership. Now this debacle! Is Mr. Corbin serious about leading this Party to victory in the upcoming Local Government Elections or the National Elections in 2011? If the PNCR cannot manage their internal affairs in a transparent manner, can they be trusted to properly conduct the Nation’s business? I think not.
As a young member of the party, Founder-Leader LFS Burnham admonished us (Party members) to be like Caesar’s wife – that is beyond reproach. He must be turning in his grave to witness the behaviour of the present Leadership.
Those who aspire to Leadership must let their performance catapult them into that sphere of influence, not misuse their positions to pursue their own personal and selfish agendas. Those of us who have taken the time to move around the country know full well what the people think of the present Leadership.
Like Aubrey I think that Volda Lawrence is being used in a vulgar attempt to hijack the Leadership of the Party at the Congress in August.
The members of the Party cannot sit idly by and allow this power grab to succeed; rather they should launch a determined campaign to ensure that election process is transparent. They should demand to inspect the Membership register in each Region. The General Secretary should ensure that the names of all delegates and observers to the Congress are available for public scrutiny before the Opening Session of Congress.
Further Volda Lawrence, who is the Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, should immediately resign as Chairwoman of the Georgetown District.
How can we hold the Government’s feet to the fire to practise good governance when we are rigging our own elections?
In closing, I’ll like to say that no amount of spinning could erase the public’s perception of the conduct of our Party. After all perception is reality and we have to find a way to convince the Guyanese people that this Party embodies men and women of integrity and rectitude who are willing to serve this nation, but they must be given the opportunity to put their myriad and various skills in the service of the people.
To make this a reality we have to rid the Party of those elements who seek to destroy it in pursuit of their own personal selfish agendas.
