Approximately one week after inscribing her name on the Earl Vigilance Memorial Lien Trophy, National Scrabble champion, Abigail McDonald, is set to continue her dominance when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) stages the Caricom Open Championships in the pavilion of the Malteenoes Sports Club on Monday July 6. Fred Collins, from whom McDonald had wrested the national crown, would still be smarting from the experience and obviously would come out with guns blazing in search of redemption. James Krakowsky and Yvonne Murray are two other players that have been holding their own and can present problems for McDonald and Collins.
Throw in Moen Gafoor and Floyd Carmichael and the situation becomes more competitive.
Indeed, the quality of play witnessed in the Earl Vigilance Memorial should warn the top players that the lowly seeded contestants are not going to surrender that easily.
In that tournament McDonald carted off the honours but she should be wary of the fact that Carmichael had compiled as many games as her, losing by a mere spread of 163.
Also in that tournament, several players, Leon Belony, Ulric Harris, Krakowsky, Gafoor and R O Michael all amassed four games apiece and were only separated by dint of their spreads.
A competitive tournament is, therefore, envisaged and just about any of the players can cart off the honours. Word formation time is 10:00hrs.
