Defending Berbice Football Association senior Coca Cola champions New Amsterdam United (NAU) have regained the lead in the competition when they needled Cougars on Wednesday afternoon at Burnham Park, New Amsterdam.
The win for the defending champs takes them to 9 points, 3 clear of second placed Cougars.
Engineering the win for NAU was Kelvin Joseph who drilled the shot past the diving custodian, Ryan Kellowan in the 20th minute of the game.
Cougars had their fair share of chances to level the score but they all went wide of the mark. NAU mixed their attacks with strong defensive work to hold on to their slim advantage for the remaining 70 minutes.
Unfortunately the intriguing encounter was marred by two post-match red cards issued to Cougars players Horace Roache and Dexter Bennett for being abusive to Referee Virgil Watts, who carried the game.
Action will continue this afternoon when debutants Strike Force United and Scottsburg United square off at Burnham Park from 16:00hrs.
The competition will kick on Sunday at the Blairmont #3 ground and Burnham Park.
Games slated for Blairmont from 14:00hrs – Rosignol United spearheaded by Shawn ‘Uncle’ Brutus and Roncy Caleb will match skills with Real Union whose charge will be led by Fraser brothers, Delroy and Delwin. The main attraction brings together underdogs Barzilla and newcomers Strike Force United.
Over at Burnham Park, Scottsburg and Mahaicony tangle in opening play from 14:00hrs with the feature match between front runners NAU and Pistons United.
