– asked relatives for $1.6M
Relatives of US citizen Kwame Rumel Jobronewet confirmed yesterday that they received a call from someone who claimed to have the 67-year-old man, now missing for almost a month.
Kaieteur News understands that the caller contacted the relatives last week and claimed that Jobronewet had contracted malaria, while demanding $1.6M from the relatives.
However, the caller never contacted the family again. Kaieteur News was told that police were informed about the incident.
Jobronewet arrived in Guyana on June 12 for his mother’s funeral and disappeared that same day.
According to reports, he stopped briefly at a relative’s home in Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara, before heading for another family residence in Company Road, Buxton. A female cousin who resides there said that the elderly man left at around 15:00 hrs after informing her that he was going back to Goedverwagting.
However, a Buxton shopkeeper told Kaieteur News that a man fitting Jabronewet’s description, and speaking with an American accent had come to his shop at around 20:00 hrs that same night.
He told Kaieteur News that the man had tried to buy a drink with US coins.
However, he had told the customer that the coins could not be accepted and the man had left.
Police questioned the shopkeeper and Jobronewet’s cousin, and searched the Buxton backlands but found no trace of the missing man. A police official stated that investigators have not given up the search.
Meanwhile, relatives continue to receive conflicting reports about the American’s whereabouts.
Some callers claimed that he was seen heading for Timehri, while others said he was seen in Victoria, East Coast Demerara.
Jobronewet was reportedly last seen wearing a pair of blue trousers, a white shirt with blue stripes, black shoes and a white Kangol cap. He was also said to be carrying three small bags.
His relatives believe that he had a large sum of US currency in his possession to assist with expenses for his mother’s funeral.
Persons with information of Mr. Jobronewet’s whereabouts can contact his relatives at 222-2688, or contact the nearest police station.
