Coach of the Guyana Rugby squad preparing for the NAWIRA Under-19 Championship Qualifier for the IRB U-20, 2010 World Trophy to be held in the Cayman Islands from July 4-11 Laurie Adonis told Kaieteur Sport shortly after the end of the final practice game yesterday, he believes the team will do much better than last year.
Adonis said that judging from the performances during several arranged games against members of the senior team which included current and former players of the Caribbean side, the players have shown excellent improvement over the past few weeks and they seem ready to inflict some damage at the tournament.
“They are peaking at the right time and I feel that a minimum of one more practice session will have them firing on all cylinders,” Adonis opined.
“They really put on a good show against the seniors and I was very impressed because the opposition included a number of Guyana’s best players.”
According to the Coach, just a little fine tuning at certain ends of the game is needed right now.
He also said that the team is healthy except for a little niggling knee injury that one of the players is experiencing, but disclosed that he will be fully fit by the time the team arrives in the Cayman Islands.
“He was told not to play today by the doctor, but everything should be fine by the time we arrive for the tournament,” Adonis informed.
Asked about the team’s chances, Adonis in his response said that there are a few countries that Guyana has not faced over the past couple of years, but remained optimistic about our chances. “The new players have grown over the last two weeks and I must say that their progression is due in part to the support that we’ve received from the seniors who’ve come out and engaged them in simulation games to increase their confidence in such situations.”
He added that players such as Captain Lancelot Adonis, Gordon Andrews, Ryan Dojoy and Gavin Thompson are all returning from last year’s edition and they are the ones that will be depended on to carry the brunt of burden.
“These players in addition to a few others are the ones we are hinging our chances on, but that is not to say that every player on the pitch does not have a responsibility to play their part in ensuring total success,” he mentioned. The team leaves early tomorrow morning.
