There are many people who are of the opinion that the government must never be supported. Disciplined struggle however sees beyond these narrow confines, disciplined struggle entails working for the betterment of the country, even if this means that at times the government must be supported.
Those who long for change in Guyana must realize that by helping to achieve certain positive goals, it is not the government and ruling party that is being helped.
Rather it is the people who are involved in bringing about positive change and this involvement is empowering. For this reason, there is nothing wrong with persons coming to the assistance of the government so long as it would bring benefits to the country.
Unfortunately we practise in Guyana zero- sum alliances in that support for anything that is done by the government or ruling party is seen as being support for the agencies themselves.
This must change because the only way there will be meaningful change is for the people to come to realize their own capacity to make a difference even if this entails working with the government for the good of the country.
Too often we pay only lip service to putting Guyana first. But if we are serious about making a change for the better in Guyana we would try to do what is right for Guyana regardless of who is in power.
One person who I know is only interested in helping his country become a better place is the publisher of this newspaper, Mr. Glenn Lall.
Glenn, as he is fondly called, is not interested in power or fame. He is also not interested in what this country can do for him.
He is interested in making Guyana a better place. This is what he is about and this is what his newspaper is about.
This newspaper may have started out with commercial interests, but for many years now has been about bringing betterment to this country.
And all of this is because of the vision of Glenn who has been prepared to take the knocks, the boycott of government ads for ten years and now to endure the threats against his publishing house because he feels it is important that the Guyanese people be told the truth and be allowed to express how they feel without these views being filtered through class, political or commercial lens.
Glenn is adamant about one thing: those who wish to hatch their plans to deal with Kaieteur News cannot be prevented for pursuing this course. But he knows that he has to continue to work for the betterment of Guyana regardless of the price to this newspaper.
This is not because Glenn is into any political agenda or because he wants to boost his ego. While Glenn is not someone that you will see very often in any temple, mosque or church, he is one of the most spiritual persons that you will ever meet.
He believes that he was placed here on this earth to make a difference. And this is why he is passionate about what he does; not because he is running for anything. The only race in which Glenn is running is the human race.
He is not into promoting betterment for the money or for prestige. He wants to see Guyana become a place where everyone can live in peace and in contentment. This is what he is about.
I am sure there are many who share his vision and who want to see the best for Guyana regardless of which party is in power. And we need in this country to make use of these persons because they mean good and can do a tremendous amount of good for this country.
I would like to see Glenn play a role in bringing about greater transparency in government procurement. I am sure if asked, he will willingly play a role because he is not seeking benefits for himself. Someone like Glenn should be put to head the Procurement Commission.
That body is not the body that will awards contracts but will ensure that the proper regulations and procedures are in place and will make rules to ensure transparency.
If there is anyone who can do it, I know that Glenn can because he has something that many brilliant and capable leaders do not have. He has what separates the giants from the simpletons.
He has character.
We need someone with the strength of character of a Glenn Lall to head that commission. We do not need that body to be headed by someone who is weak; we do not need a sycophant to head the Commission; we need someone to put Guyana first.
We need someone like Glenn Lall to clean up the mess that is taking place as regards government contracts.
