One-Day practice match planned for today at Police
By Sean Devers
Demerara Under-19 Captain Rajendra Naikbarran will miss this year’s TCL regional youth cricket series in Jamaica after not sufficiently recovering from an illness, which forced him to miss the entire 14-day training camp.
The players are scheduled to break camp tomorrow after touring the TCL plant in the city.
The Anthony Bramble led side is scheduled to depart for Jamaica on July 7 where they face the Leeward Islands in their opening game from July 9.
Naikbarran, one of the 14 chosen for the Jamaica trip, was not among those present when the camp began and produced a medical covering him for 14 days from June 19.
“This is a disappointment since Rajendra was one of the players picked in the 14-man squad to travel and since he will not be ready for any cricket until the day we break camp I was concerned that even if he recovered he was missing vital pre-tournament preparation, which involved the cricket itself,” Johnson told Kaieteur Sport.
Essequibo left-arm spinner Anthony Adams replaces Naikbarran in the touring party after taking a five-wicket haul for a Rest Team against the National youths in their only practice match last week to strengthen his chances of making his national debut at any level.
Eight of the nine players eligible from last year’s competition have retained their places in the 14-man squad with Berbice fast bowler Keron Frazer the only one not to retain his place.
The selectors went for the lively Essequibian Ronford Beaton who missed matches in the Inter-County series due to an ankle injury. Beaton is carrying a slight finger injury sustained in the practice match but this is not a cause for concern, since the wiry pacer should be fully fit by the time the players assemble in the City on July 6.
While Guyana has won the 3-day title 11 times since claiming their first crown in 1975, the South Americans have never won the One-Day championship, since it was introduced in 1998 in Trinidad and Bramble feels this is because the focus has been more on 3-day cricket.
“I think we don’t do as well in One-Day cricket as we do in three-day matches because we tend to focus more on 3-day cricket during preparations leading up to the competition. We have set 2 three-day practice games but the guys have been playing a lot of One-Day cricket this year at the club level and if we play to our full potential I believe we have the ability to adjust to the One-Day format and put up a strong fight,” Bramble said.
Experienced opener Trevon Griffith, coach, Hubern Evans and Manger Alvin Johnson share the view that three-day cricket more suits our players, while Griffith, in his second year at this level, pointed out that the batsmen seem not able to switch from 3-day cricket to the more attacking style required for the One-Day competition.
“I think sometimes our batsmen are too defensive and maybe even a bit timid, which affect our one-day performance. The guys have the talent and good techniques, but maybe mentally our batsmen are not positive enough in the limited overs game and even though they are hard to dismiss they don’t score as quickly as say the Leeward Islands or Jamaicans,” Evans, a former Guyana First-Class left-hander, opined.
The Guyana squad: Anthony Bramble (Captain), Royston Alkins (Vice-Captain), Trevon Griffith, Jeetendra Sookdeo, Harrell Greene, Seon Hetmyer, Alex Amsterdam, Jonathon Foo, Andre Stoll, Anthony Adams, Totaram Bishun, Seon Daniels, Keon Joseph, Ronsford Beaton.
Barbados play the Windward Islands at Chedwin Park, Guyana face the Leeward Islands at Up Park Camp and Trinidad & Tobago battle Jamaica at Kensington in the first round games from July 9-11.
