St. Pius and St. Angela’s were crowned the Georgetown Zone Boys and Girls champions of the Al Sport & Tour Promotions / Guyana Teachers Union / Stereo Sonic Primary Schools Windball Cricket Championships after defeating their respective rivals yesterday, at the National Park Tarmac.
The respective Boys and Girls champions St. Pius (right) and St. Angela’s Primary Schools pose with their trophies at the presentation ceremony yesterday.
In the Boys final- St. Pius cruised to an easy 37 runs win over Monar Educational Institute.
Taking first strike, St. Pius closed on 70-2 off the allotted 6 overs with Marvin Carter slamming an unbeaten 27 with two sixes and a similar amount of fours. Josiah Charles added 17 not out.
In reply, MEI was restricted to 33-7 when the overs expired. Carter returned to grab three wickets along with Romel Legall.
Carter was later named Most Valuable Player.
In the playoff for third place, St. Agnes defeated St. Sidwell’s by nine wickets.
St. Sidwell’s were dismissed for 30. No batsman managed to reach double figures.
In reply, St. Agnes knocked off the required runs for the loss of one wicket. They ended on 31-1 in 5.3 overs.
In the Girls final- St. Angela’s beat St. Andrew’s by eight wickets.
St. Andrew’s batted first and made 44-3 with Andrika Mickle 18 not out and Destiny Haynes 12, the principal scorers.
In their turn at the crease, St. Angela’s reached 47-2 in 5.3 overs. Atifa Paul 13 not out and Sarah Daniels 11 not out were the topscorers.
In the playoff for third place, Mae’s won by a walkover after West Ruimveldt failed to show up.According to Organiser Allister Munroe, over 182 school teams participated in the nationwide competition which was also part sponsored by National Sports Commission.
