Poor defence and the absence of potent offence cost School of the Nations dearly in a crucial encounter against rivals, Marian Academy yesterday, when the National Schools’ Basketball Festival (NSBF) fittingly intensified.
The School of the Nations needed finishers in the final 10 minutes of the second half, but because they could not find any, the school went under 27-22 in the Under-17 category of the competition at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Forward Tequain Vieira led Marian Academy on offence with nine points, while Jonathan Pooran had 12 for ‘Nations’, who had trailed Marian 11-13 with 10 minutes left in the second half. Nations were within striking distance.
However, turnovers owed to faulty passes allowed Selvaughn Moseley to dominate some vital plays on the inside, which gave Marian more second chances on offence. Vieira and Nicholas Braithwaite made Marian’s finishes.
Derek Quaicoe and Pritipaul Singh tried haplessly to save ‘Nations’ in the game but their efforts were futile in the absence of support. Marian remain on course for a quarterfinal place in the Under-17 version of the competition.
Pre-tournament favourites, Kwakwani thrashed Queen’s College 81-9 in one of the earlier Under-17 games, with Dominique Douglas scoring 23 points, Keswhan Thomas 11 and Eon Meredith 10 for the winners.
Rajendra Singh had five points for Queen’s, whose tertiary equivalent, President’s College had a convincing 47-30 win against Tutorial High School. National junior player, Richard Mohandatt scored 23 points for President’s College.
Calvin Harding and Elton Jefford Jr. were the leading offensive players for Tutorial with 10 and nine points respectively. Tutorial High must win against ‘Nations’ in the Under-19 competition to advance to the quarterfinals.
Tutorial also went down 35-17 to Plaisance in the Under-15 competition. Forde scored 15 points for Plaisance while Ginelle Ifill scored eight for Tutorial. Cummings Lodge won 41-13 against New Campbellville in the group.
Kevon Hyles scored 16 points for Cummings Lodge, while D. Vantull scored six points in the losing effort for New Campbellville. The National Basketball Festival is being staged in three age groups: Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19. (Edison Jefford)
