Helping the youths to be tomorrow’s leaders

DEAR EDITOR,
Today it is a profound tragedy to see the destruction of our youths being so visible and evident as they plunge into the abyss of immorality, engaging themselves in sexual malpractices and drug abuse thus relinquishing the moral fibre of a decent and honest means of substance.
Economic hardship, lack of employment and poor living conditions have created much frustration in many homes, to the extent where parents are unknowingly abandoning their children despite living together under one roof.
It is sometimes very sad to see many children living in the said home, having different surnames and sheltering under the torn garment of the single-parent petticoat.
Vulgar music, drugs, criminality, poor environmental upbringing, lack of proper parental control, lust for easy money and being disobedient, have all contributed immensely to the decline of moral values in this respect.
It is sickening and most disturbing to be made aware of the many premature sex escapades that are ripping the moral fibres from the bodies of those young teens. The escalation of juvenile delinquency is also a source of grave concern.
In today’s society, many parents have contributed greatly to their children’s plight. Woe be unto those parents who slam the door on the welfare officer. Woe be unto those parents who wantonly give permission to their children to engage in the field of crime.
Woe be unto those parents who are violent towards the educating moulders of their children.
It is, however, not rightfully ours to condemn, but to reach out to those in apparent hopeless situations. In this respect, it is therefore expedient for everyone to get involved in order to save our leaders of tomorrow.
Apart from parents, welfare officers, teachers, religious heads and other entities, the police force can play an integral role in this respect.
They ought to be complimented for their sterling efforts so far in the fight against crime.
However, they should be very tactful at all times when dealing with juveniles, because their actions can very well be instrumental in setting an innocent man on the pathway to crime.
