Essequibo Magistrate, Faith McGusty, yesterday refused to hear matters at the Charity Magistrate’s Court, citing the deplorable condition of the facility.
The magistrate was supported in her actions by several Attorneys, who despite the injustice faced by their clients, were critical of the court building and its compound.
Yesterday, although several persons were inside the court house awaiting the commencement of proceedings, the Magistrate and the lawyers refused to enter the compound.
Several prisoners, some of whom were brought from the main jail in the city, had to return without their matters being heard.
Other persons who had traveled from as far as the Upper Pomeroon also suffered a similar fate.
This newspaper understands that there were several high profile matters including murder that were slated to be heard yesterday.
The Charity Magistrate’s Court has been in a deplorable condition for the past two years with high bush surrounding the building.
A bridge leading to the compound is so treacherous that several persons narrowly missed sustaining injuries.
One attorney told Kaieteur News that he almost fractured his foot while traversing the bridge.
The courthouse itself has no electricity or running water and it is a wonder that cases are heard there. The roof leaks whenever it rains.
The maintenance of the Charity Magistrate’s Court falls under the responsibility of the Charity Neighbourhood Democratic Council.
Magistrate McGusty threatened to take a similar course of action on the next court day (Thursday) if the situation is not rectified.
