Defending champions Kristian Jeffrey and Nicolette Fernandes have both drawn a bye in the first round of the National Squash Championships, which serves off today at the Georgetown Courts.
Jeffrey, who recently returned from Canada where he is attending University has been seeded #1 and is the overwhelming favourite to retain his crown, while Fernandes, who will also campaign in the Men’s draw, enjoys the same status in the Ladies segment.
Among the other players, who will be vying for contention in the Men’s Division are Regan Pollard, who will be making a return after a hiatus, Alexander Arjoon, Raphael DeGroot, the experienced Robert Fernandes, and promising juniors Deje Dias, Jason Ray Khalil, Steven Xavier, Nicholas Narain and Nyron Joseph.
Some of the other players to confirm participation include Damien Fernandes, Javier Grau and Alex Gouveia.
On the distaff side, Fernandes will be challenged by the likes of her sister Chantelle, the Jeffrey twins (Kayla and Keisha), Ashley Khalil, Victoria Arjoon, Mary Fung-A-Fat, Daina King, Ashley DeGroot and Lydia Fraser.
With most of the top juniors preparing for the upcoming Caribbean Tournament slated for Barbados later this month, it would be interesting to see how they fare against the seniors, while using the competition as valuable practice for the overseas engagement.
