The Rotary Club of Stabroek Georgetown this past week at a simple inducting ceremony held at the Pegasus Hotel’s Savannah suite, inaugurated its new board of directors for the period 2009 to 2010 as well as its new president for the same period. The outgoing president, Colin Thompson told the gathering of Stabroek Rotary members and guests that he was grateful to have been able to serve in that capacity. Thompson who said that he was a big fan of metaphors, departed his presidency leaving the club with a few such as, “partnerships work and don’t be afraid to get off the beaten path in doing whatever needs to be done.”
In a quite ingenious way the president delivered his farewell address through a guest of his Samuel Medas who astounded the audience, delivering a rendition of Chris Rice’s ‘Go light the world.’
According to the lyrics of the song, “There is a candle in every soul. Some brightly burning, some dark and cold. There is a Spirit who brings a fire, ignites a candle and makes His home. So carry your candle, run to the darkness. Seek out the helpless, confused and torn. Hold out your candle for all to see it. Take your candle, and go light your world. Take your candle, and go light your world.” Guest speaker at the function was Dr La Mar Hasbrouck, who charged the club and the incoming board and President Gavin Todd to strike a balance within the club between the thinkers that come up with the ideas, the planners, the doers who execute the plans and finally the reflectors that assess what was achieved.
He noted that when there is the balance there can be maximum performance levels by the club.
Dr Hasbrouk charged the club to set lofty goals for the future and if the club achieved all of the charges it could be a potent recipe for success.
Incoming President Todd told the gathering of Rotarians among others that the Theme for this Rotary Year 2009 to 2010 is very relevant and appropriate ‘The Future of Rotary is in our Hands.’ “Incidentally, the theme seems to have been formulated with us in mind, since it came at a time when our club has just outgrown its infancy stage and has entered adolescence. Let us commit ourselves to this theme to ensure its relevance and appropriateness in our thrust in service to humanity.”
He told the gathering that for the next and ensuing years, he envisages the club continuing on its path of growth. “I see maximum involvement from the membership as we take on new projects and bring relief to those in the community that depend upon our intervention, be it making available to the residents of St. Monica potable water to reduce the incidences of water borne diseases, or improving the literacy skills of the children of Buxton.
“We will also continue to build and develop our club through fellowship within and with the other Rotary clubs. These simple aspirations, commitments and responsibilities are well within our capacity and we will give them priority.”
Assistant Governor of Rotary in Guyana, Keith Williams, reminded the club of its several achievements under the stewardship of the past President, Colin Thompson, whilst reminding the gathering that the Club had submitted for a Rotary International Presidential Citation. Williams also announced that given the success of the Buxton Youth Developers Literacy Project that was undertaken by the club, it was awarded best co-operative project award for the year 2008 to 2009.
In pointing out the magnitude of the award, he told the gathering that the Stabroek Club was the only such club in Guyana to win such award.
The point man for the project, Lennie Shufler, who himself was awarded with two prestigious awards for his commitment to helping the youths in Buxton.
