Intended to help reduce the problem of littering by about 30 percent, the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown, through its Public Relations Department, has introduced an initiative which has school aged students as its primary target.
According to Deputy Public Relations Officer, Debra Lewis, the venture was crystallised some time ago by the Public Relations Department and has as its main focus to address the problem which has over the years negatively impacted the drainage integrity of the city’s drainage system.
She related that the entity is striving to have a more holistic approach to the issue of environmental protection with much emphasis on arresting the problem of littering. Lewis noted that it was recognised that the school was the ideal area to target initially, as children would be more open and willing to learn.
Additionally, she pointed to the fact that students are drawn from various communities and could help to encourage their relatives to end the practice of littering.
She said that efforts were made to identify problem schools in the city, schools where littering predominate in order to find one which would be most responsive to the programme.
The South Ruimveldt Park Primary School was identified to facilitate a pilot programme, a move which was accepted by the head of the school and endorsed by the Ministry of Education, Lewis said.
At the inception of the venture which commenced about six months ago, Lewis recounted that the municipality had engaged a clean-up campaign in the city, a time which seem most ideal to commence the programme.
Although the venture initially saw students of Primary Three and Four being exposed to a series of lectures, there was no set marker which governed how the venture should unfold and the ultimate outcome. It was with this in mind she said that a decision was made to widen the target audiences including the entire school population. Also a decision was made to have litter within the environment be reduced by at least 30 percent, Lewis said. The venture also saw students participating in an essay writing competition which will see the writers of the best essays being awarded trophies at a ceremony slated to be held at the primary school at 10:00 hours on Monday.
Another phase of the programme will also see teachers, parents and vendors who operate around the school being targeted. According to Lewis, the vendors will be examined to determine if they are operating within environmental and health guidelines. This initiative, according to Lewis, will eventually be expanded to other areas of the city.
