An official at the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) has disclosed that a customer, who had earlier claimed that monies were withdrawn from his account after he had misplaced his debit card, was indeed responsible for his on misfortune.
The customer had alleged that when he went to report that his savings debit card was lost, it was discovered that there were several withdrawals totaling close to $200,000 made within a 24 hour period.
The withdrawals were reportedly made at Automatic Teller Machines on Sheriff Street and on the East Bank Demerara.
The customer had accused the bank of negligence since he claimed that no one knew his Personal Identification Number (PIN) and suggested that access to the funds in his account could only have been what he described as an inside job.
This prompted the bank to launch an investigation, since it insisted that not even the bank could know a customer’s pin number.
According to the bank official, the customer was invited to a meeting but he did not turn up, instead threatening to send a lawyer’s letter to the bank.
The official told this newspaper that footage obtained from their surveillance cameras where the withdrawals were made, showed persons associated with the customer making the withdrawals.
When confronted with this information the customer reportedly backed down on his accusations.
“He said to us that the bank should not bother, it was his fault,” the bank official told Kaieteur News.
From all appearances the customer was with friends on Sheriff Street and may have given them access to his account.
“There is no way that the bank could know your PIN number. You have to give it to someone,” the bank official stated. When contacted yesterday, the customer said that he would not be blaming the bank anymore since the fault may have been his.
“I think I have an idea who did it. It’s not the bank. I don’t have a debit card now but I will still keep my account,” the customer said.
