The Police Administration in ‘D’ Division (West Demerara/East Bank Essequibo) has embarked on an initiative whereby the police will regularly interface with residents of the various communities on issues of mutual concern.
This is in keeping with a decision that was made at the recently concluded Police Annual Officers’ Conference 2009. It will be conducted in all policing Divisions.
It is intended that this process will result in the improvement of police/community relations and the enhancement of the quality of service provided by the police in the Divisions.
Divisional Commander Assistant Commissioner, Paulette Morrison; the Second-in-Command Superintendent John Sauers; and other key officers of the Division, met with residents of the La Grange and Wales Police Station Districts on Thursday June 18, last, at the Bagotville Community Centre to interact and discuss their complaints and concerns.
The forum was attended by a number of residents, among whom were Isaac Bhagwandin, Chairman of the district Neighbourhood Democratic Council; and Khain Singh, Chairman of the Divisional Community Policing Executive.
The residents raised a number of issues including the poor response to reports by ranks of the Wales Police Station; noise nuisance emanating from residences, motor vehicles and business places; stray animals roaming the streets and causing damage to private and public property; unlawful activities in the new housing areas; youth gangs; and petty thefts by persons suspected to be using drugs.
The Divisional Commander and her team responded positively to the concerns raised and gave the assurance that the issues will be addressed. She emphasised that condign action would be taken against ranks found guilty of unprofessional conduct.
She called on the residents to continue to support the police in their efforts to deal with crime and traffic in the communities.
Residents were also urged to form themselves into Community Policing Groups so that they can help to safeguard their communities and also to encourage suitable persons to enlist as members of the Guyana Police Force, Neighbourhood Police or the Special Constabulary.
