The preliminary inquiry into the Kaieteur News killings continued yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. The matter is being heard by Magistrate Nigel Hawke.
Yesterday, a Police Corporal gave his evidence in chief about five post mortem examinations that were conducted by the chief pathologist, Dr. Bridgemohan.
The corporal also stated that he was given a detailed report about the cause of death of each of the five pressmen.
He was led by Police Prosecutor Robert Tyndall. Reexamination was declined by defence lawyers, Compton Richardson and Mohamed Zafar. The post mortem reports were then tendered into evidence.
On trial for the murders are Dwight Da Silva, Quincy Evans and “Nasty-man” a juvenile. Jermaine “Skinny” Charles, now deceased, had also been charged for the murders. He was killed in a confrontation with the police at Kuru Kururu last August.
The hearing had to be put down on Wednesday last, due to the fact that Police Prosecutor Robert Tyndall and the Police Corporal were not present.
An arrest warrant was issued for the corporal. According to the prosecutor, the corporal had prior knowledge that he needed to be in court to give his evidence.
The matter was adjourned for July 1, however, that date is tentative because the magistrate is expected to leave the jurisdiction at the end of the month.
As part of his transfer, he is expected to complete the preliminary inquires that are before his court. This one is still incomplete due to the fact that a majority of witnesses were not turning up.
Last week both lawyers and magistrate had complained about the prosecution’s attitude towards the case. The magistrate had questioned the prosecution, if he knew that he was leaving the jurisdiction at the end of the month.
Attorney at law Compton Richardson had questioned if the witnesses were summoned because he was of the opinion that he was being made a “fool”.
After a number of adjournments over the past year, the PI recommenced earlier this month.
Edgar Stewart, Cobeer Persaud, Nadine Wegman, Rasheed Mohamed, and Ganesh Persaud have all taken the witness box to testify in the matter.
