Additional funds needed
Manager of the Guyana Under-19 rugby squad Curtis Jacobs speaking with Kaieteur Sport Thursday at the National Park disclosed that the players have made significant improvement over the past few weeks.
The squad is currently in training for the upcoming NAWIRA Under-19 Championship Qualifier for the IRB U-20, 2010 World Trophy to be held in the Cayman Islands from July 4-11. According to Jacobs, the squad has been engaged in practice games against the senior team and have shown considerable progress in every match.
“We are trying to intensify the game simulations because by next week we will be picking the team to travel to the tournament,” Jacobs disclosed.
Touching on the team’s chances in this year’s competition, the Manager said that the squad is fortunate to have some key players from last year’s tournament in Barbados, who’ve brought their experience to the training sessions and have been working well.
“The players are generally doing better than when they first started, but there are still some technical deficiencies that the coaching staff, is working on at present to correct,” he added.
Jacobs revealed that a few players had suffered some minor injuries, but have recovered and could still vie for selection on the team.
The team is expected to leave next Friday, but according to Jacobs, the management is still looking for additional funding for the tour. Guyana finished fourth in the last competition.
The sessions are be conducted by coach, Laurence Adonis and assisted by Theodore Henry.
The squad: Richard Coates*, Treon Emptage*, Soren Cox, Gordon Andrews, Lancelot Adonis, Jermaine Abel, Clinton Mars*, Rudolph Ogle, Jamaal Yarde, Rondell McArthur, Terry Adams*, Allain Crawford, Ryan Dojoy, Colin Billingy, Quincy Jones, Yannick Jones, Rickford Cummings*, Gavin Thompson, Javier Butcher*, Lloydan Layne*, Clive Richmond*, Kevon Campbell, Trevor Mathieson, Mark Sobers, Jermaine Jacobs, Joseph Weatherspoon, Rupert Giles*, Nicholas Northey, Henry Jordan, Dennis Alexander, Claude Alexander, Christopher Nicholas, Vallon Adams, Twain Hemerding and Mark Massiah.
