Deodat Challu of 119 Oleander Gardens, East Coast Demerara, was placed on $85,000 bail on Thursday, on a charge of conspiring with persons unknown and forged one compliance in favour of his business “Oleander Plant Hire and General Compactor Inc”.
The crime was allegedly committed between October 28, last and April 15, last.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was represented by attorney at law, Vic Puran, who said that his client, who is a contractor and father of four, poses no flight risk.
The lawyer further stated that he turned his client over to the police after it was circulating that he was wanted by the police.
Puran noted that his client had employed an accountant who took care of all of Challu’s financial matters, and that his client was totally unaware that the company’s compliance was forged.
Getting “compliance” was nothing strenuous, he argued. Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith, who did not object to bail, said that there are further investigations that need to be carried out.
Puran interjected and told the court that the police are trying to locate an accountant which was employed with the defendant.
According to the lawyer, once the accountant is found, the charges against his client would be dropped.
Bail was granted and the accused is expected to make another court appearance on July 31.
