President Bharrat Jagdeo has said that Bosai has no plans to institute any major lay offs or to close down its operations here in Guyana.
At a press conference yesterday at the Office of the President, the Head of State said that while all of the aluminium plants have been shut down in Jamaica, Bosai still has some overseas markets.
However, the President emphasised that the company is finding marketing progressively harder.
He said that Rusal, the Russian company operating in Berbice, has given similar commitments.
“From the last report I have seen, Bosai has no plans for any major lay offs or to shut down its operations in Guyana,” President Jagdeo said.
Earlier in the year, Chairman of Region Ten, Mortimer Mingo, had told this newspaper that the retrenchment of some 100 workers from Bosai would certainly have a negative impact on the town of Linden and on the region as a whole.
He had said that this would only add to the high unemployment rate that already exists in the region.
“I am particularly concerned about what I understand are the reasons for the layoffs, that as early as possible they are to find positive investment here in the region to deal with unemployment,” Mingo had said.
Mingo pointed out that every year there are some 2000-odd children who finish school, and this, he said, does not do good for the country.
“And the question is what do we do, where do we go from here? And so we are really advocating and hoping that leverage can be given to us to go out and seek inward investments for the region.”
Earlier in April, the Bosai Management met with the National Association of Agricultural Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE) and discussed the imminent retrenchment of workers.
Bosai had indicated that the company is seriously being affected by the global economic crisis and as such will retrench some 100 workers among those would be trainee staff, casual staff and some permanent staff.
It was noted that the workers will be paid all their benefits. For every six weeks the workers will receive one week’s pay.
Bosai had explained that currently the steel industry is encountering some difficulties and as such the company is forced to make the decision.
It was however stated, that some of the workers will be on recall.
