…stallholders renew calls for private security
Stallholders in the Stabroek Market have renewed their calls for a private security firm as thieves struck once again, carting off more than one million dollars in articles from the MBI Music Masters.
The breakage occurred sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
Stallholder, Mohamed Khan, who is well known as Imran, told this newspaper that he had closed his business at 17:00 hours on Wednesday and upon his return, discovered the breakage.
“As soon as we opened, we noticed everything scattered. Upon checking we discovered that they had entered by breaking out a board at the back,” Khan said.
Among the items missing are a quantity of DVD players, DVD portables, mp3 players, mobile phones and accessories, estimated to be more than a million dollars in total.
This newspaper observed that several DVDs were scattered on the floor as well as a number of empty boxes which were pilfered.
According to Khan, the market is manned by security from the City Constabulary of the Mayor and City Council on a 24-hour basis.
“They didn’t hear anything, they didn’t know anything. Normally what they do is polish it off. It’s like you must not blame them for what happened. But we pay a substantial amount of money to them and it includes security,” the stallholder told this newspaper.
This is the second time in less than two months that Khan’s stall has been broken into.
In early May, thieves hit the store and Khan suffered similar losses.
He believes that the perpetrators of the May heist are the same persons who carried out the recent breakage.
He said that this time around the thieves targeted mostly accessories, which would fit the equipment that were previously stolen.
“We cannot depend on the market security. There is this issue about privatizing the security and nothing has been done so far,” Khan said.
He pointed out that while he is not accusing the City Constabulary of anything, there should be an independent investigation into the matter.
“You putting them to try themselves, so you wouldn’t expect any results,” the stallholder told Kaieteur News.
But sources at the City Constabulary have denied any collusion in the breakage.
Detectives from the police Criminal Investigations Department have visited the establishment and dusted it for fingerprints.
But from the look of it, the work was done by professionals since the prints appeared to be deliberately smeared.
