The World Health Organisation has stated that the H1N1 virus commonly referred to as the ‘Swine Flu’ is not a food or animal health issue since it is being transmitted from human to human.
However, this has since declared that Guyana’s pork is safe for consumption.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, local health and agriculture officials have also confirmed that there is no evidence or reports that swine have been infected with the virus in Guyana.
Surprisingly, to reiterate this point and to assure consumers that there is no health risk associated with eating locally produced pork, President Bharrat Jagdeo and Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, along with members of the Cabinet and other senior officials will partake in a ‘pork buffet’ at the New Thriving Chinese Restaurant today.
Noting that the local pig industry has seen a decline in sales over the last several months, Minister Persaud stated that this exercise specifically targets those who consume pork but are unsure about its safety.
“I want to reiterate that Guyana’s pork is safe. While the Ministry of Health continues to monitor the situation, consumers are advised that there is no risk when consuming pork or any other livestock product in Guyana.”
The Ministry of Agriculture is collaborating with the Ministry of Health, as part of a national surveillance programme to ensure that our animal health system remains intact and in a state of alert.
Recently, the Agriculture Ministry reported a decline in the sale of pork on the local market.
It was noted that the surveillance in terms of the pig farms and facilities are continuing and vets are stationed in all ten regions.
The Ministry also has a very comprehensive disease action plan which can be activated immediately should there be the need to have such a plan in place.
