Dear Editor,
Sadly, yet another woman dies at the hands of a man. Domestic violence and many other social ills are usually blamed on the small man.
This tradition which was part of the colonial mindset continues.
Governments usually spew a lot of rhetoric about families being the foundation stone of the society, yet they never mention to what extent the negligence of their governance policies negatively affect the outcome of the dreams and aspirations of families.
Marriages are promoted, yet gender relationship and the resolution of conflicts within the institution of marriage is not part of our primary and secondary educational system. Neither is it compulsory at the tertiary level although available for students who wish to pursue this aspect of social studies.
Violence in any form is usually condemned and rightfully so.
Yet, too often, governments are the biggest contributor to violence when they overtax a system, then underpay the wage earner to the extent that his/her income bears no relation to the cost of living index thereby contributing to the type of stressful environment that is the breeding ground for conflict in and out of the home.
The environment in Guyana has been rendered stressful because of low wages and high taxes. Both parents are usually out of the home scratching for a living, while leaving their off-springs inadequately supervised and nurtured. Overtime the accumulation of scarce opportunities breeds depression, low self esteem, fractured values and high irritability.
Women expect men to be good providers. A wage package that is unable to cope corrupts the whole relationship with a heavy dose of disrespect.
What we are witnessing is the first serious signs of a society about to implode because those who govern us have been most callous and unjust in the way they administer wealth, wages and pensions.
With Barbados and other refugee camps closing their doors, Guyana is in deep trouble unless there is a quantum change in attitude by our government with respect to embracing good governance.
