Belfield Tigers battle Mid Section Lions in Sunday’s finale
In picture (from left) Calvin De Souza (Belfield Tigers), Donald Lutchman (Mid Section Lions), Collette Dublin (Victoria ladies skipper) and Everall Mundy of Lions will all throw down the gauntlet for their respective teams.
The annual Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Inter-Block Football competition at the East Coast village of Victoria will culminate Sunday at the Victoria Community Centre Ground.
The triple header card kicks off from 17:00 hours with the first of two grudge matches. Buxton Under-17 will take on Victoria Kings Under-17 in the opening contest. This will be followed at 18:30 hours by a female match-up between Victoria Kings and Georgetown which promises to be a cracker since both teams have a lot to prove.
Lots of action is expected in the opening U-17 scrap. The last time Buxton and Victoria Kings met, the Kings prevailed 1-0. Buxton will be coming stronger this time. Reports suggest that they have been training hard for the return clash.
National Under-19 player Calvin De Souza will Captain Kings and he will receive support from Akeem Holder, Ken Gulliver, Delroy Thomas and Dexroy Fraser; the defence will be marshalled by Alden Lawrence, with help from Rondell “French man” Hassannah and Keon Semple.
Buxton on the other hand will be led by player maker Kurtis Farley, with support from Orin Talbert, Kevin Skeete, Orin Yaw and Devon Thomas.
In the ladies encounter, the last time the sides met two weeks ago the game ended 1-1 after regulation and time. Both sides then requested penalties and the Kings prevailed 5-2.
Georgetown will be led by former national player and Captain Collette Hope; she will get good support from Charmin Fraser, and Alicia Allicock. Colette Dublin will Captain Kings, she will get on field support from Neishana Castello, and skillful Striker Sash Greaves, who has scored 5 goals in the last three matches she has played. The defence will be controlled by Susan Josiah.
The feature game at 20:00 hours promises to be a scorcher with the ‘big cats’ Mid Section Lions colliding with Belfield Tigers.
Both sides feature players who are contesting the East Coast and Georgetown Premier Leagues. Tigers will be led by the dangerous and evergreen Kojo ‘Cutter’ Huntley, he will get from Aubrey Gibson, who is the tournament’s leading goal scorer; Trevor Fraser, Seon Robinson and Rolson ‘Crespo’ Morrison. The defence will see Kempton Williams, Sherlock Dowden and Dexter Wall in control.
Mid Section Lions will be led by Andrew Holder. He gets support from Kurt Adams, Rueben Morris, Marlis Johnson and Dwayne Marks. The defence includes Mortimer Murphy, Ellis Skeete, Shawn Samuels and Samuel Blackette; Andrew Williams will do duties in the goal.
Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sports Mr. Steve Ninvalle will be present to kick off the first ball at 17:00 hours to officially start the finals. A large turnout of area and other fans are expected to witness the action.
