Guyana senior player Christopher Barnwell smashed a belligerent 72 and then took 2-10 from 7 overs by the close of the opening day of the 3-day practice match for the Guyana team preparing for this year’s regional Under-19 cricket series in Jamaica from July 9.
Barnwell smashed 10 fours and a six in his 71-ball and 67-minute innings to spur the Steven Jacobs captained Rest team to 280 all out on the stroke of Tea.
The versatile cricketer who returned this week from Canada where he represented a Guyana team in a Festival 20/20 tournament, then shackled the young batsmen as the National Colts laboured to 90-3 from 32 overs on a sluggish track by the close.
Opting to bat in sultry conditions on a heavy outfield, the Rest side raced to 74 before Andrew Lyght Jnr. was bowled by Seon Daniels for an attractive 38-ball 44 decorated with 6 fours and a six.
Standby player Ryan Rajmangal (27) performed the supporting role before he was removed by leg-spinner Jonathon Foo at 82-2 and when Alex Amsterdam (1) was run out, the Rest Team were in trouble at 95-3.
However, Barnwell was joined by Jacobs and the pair revived the position with a 63-run partnership as Guyana’s suspect spin bowling department was exposed once the shine was off the ball and the pacers out of the attack.
Jacobs (29) fell to left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun at 158-4 while Barnwell seemed very unfortunate to be given run out when 28 away from his ton at 196-5.
With Foo given a long spell and Bishun and off-spinner Royston Alkins not at their best in conditions which did not best suit them, the pair of Kelon Carmichael (39) and Jamal Hinckson (37) who both play for Trinidad club Sweet Revenge, frustrated the Under-19 bowlers with composed batting. Former Guyana Under-19 left-arm spinner Dennis Legay (playing as a guest player) removed Carmichael at 267-6 to spark a dramatic collapse.
The genuinely quick 16 –year-old Keon Joseph hustled Hinckson into a rushed pull to mid-on and then scattered the stumps of Amir Khan next ball to spoil the Rest Team’s plans of a 300-plus total.
Legay bowled Dexter Solomon (1) and Ronsford Beaton (4) was cleaned up by Joseph, one of 8 players in the side with previous regional Under-19 experience as the last 5 wickets tumbled for 13 runs.
Joseph finished with 3-29 and Legay 2-12 but the fragile spin bowling attack raised concerns that another spinner could be needed in the 14-man squad which include a four-prong pace attack.
The possible unavailability of batsman Rajendra Naikbarran could pave a way for Khan, surprisingly omitted from the original squad, to be drafted in to shore up the spin attack with his on-target leg-spin.
When the Youths began their reply, Trevon Griffith, who hit 2 fours in his 19 and Harrell Greene (13) added 40 for the first wicket before Barnwell removed Greene, while 4 runs later Griffith was bowled sweeping at Jacobs’ off-spin.
Jonathon Foo, in his 3rd year at this level, played across to Barnwell and was leg before for a sedate 1 at 53-3 before Jeetendra Sookdeo (26*) and Seon Hetmyer (18*) carried their team to the close without further loss although both batsmen were given lives near the end of the day’s play.
The 2nd day’s play is scheduled to commence at 10:00hrs today.
