A father of one was yesterday remanded to prison by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
Shawn Stewart, 37, of 199 Guyhoc Park, pleaded not guilty to stealing a quantity of articles valuing a whopping $2.4M, property of Paula Alexander.
The theft occurred between December 1, 2008 and June 1, last.
Stewart told the court that he owns an electrical shop. He said that the allegation stemmed from someone breaking into his home and stealing a quantity of articles.
The man said that he came home and discovered that a hole was in the flooring. He said that he subsequently made a report at the East La Penitence Police station and notified Alexander about the theft.
According to Stewart, it was at this point that Alexander threatened him to make the allegation that he stole those articles from her.
He said that he was arrested by the police who told him that he was wanted for stealing a quantity of scrap metal from Alexander.
But Alexander told a different story. She said that the defendant was a handy man who worked with the family.
The woman said that Stewart came to her last December and told that he was being thrown out by his landlord and needed a place to stay.
She said at the time that family had a vacant house in Guyhoc. She explained that the items, which were stolen, were housed in the bottom flat of the same house.
She said that Stewart was warned about the items before he moved in.
The woman said that she kept getting various phone calls from neighbours about Stewart selling the items.
She said that she warned him on several occasions, but was too occupied to visit the property since her husband was gravely ill and she was taking care of him.
She said that a few days ago she went to the property to uplift the items, and got the shock of her life.
According to Alexander most of the items that were housed downstairs had already been sold by Stewart.
She said that she confronted him and he promptly told her that he had to live. The woman said to her surprise and embarrassment, Stewart brought the police to her home the following day accusing her of stealing the articles, which he had claimed someone else stole.
She said that this move really angered her and she immediately reported the matter. Stewart subsequently admitted the theft to the police.
He is expected to make another court appearance on July 1.
