The decomposed body of a man recovered near the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, on Tuesday has been identified as that of 39-year-old Kelvin Hinds, called Bowfoot, of Campbellville. Hinds was a suspect in last year’s GuySuCo payroll robbery on the West Bank of Demerara.
The body was positively identified by relatives yesterday at the Lyken Funeral Home Mortuary.
But investigators are still baffled as to how Hinds died since a post mortem examination failed to determine the cause of death.
Relatives are convinced that Hinds was murdered and according to his reputed wife, Shonette Howell, there were signs that he was beaten.
Police sources said that the body was found in a bushy area some 200 feet from the airport fence.
It was clad in a pair of blue three-quarter trousers, black vest and a cream-coloured cap.
A multi-coloured towel was found about a metre from the body.
Kaieteur News understands that the discovery was made around 11:30 hrs yesterday, after residents, who farm in an area behind the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, observed a flock of carrion crows flying over trees in the area.
Speaking with this newspaper yesterday, a grieving Howell said that Hinds left his home on Wednesday morning around 09:45 hours.
According to her, a brother of the dead man contacted her as well as a friend and told her that they had found the body and that it may be Hinds’s.
She gave them a description of the clothing he was wearing and they were able to confirm that it was indeed Hinds.
The woman who admitted that Hinds had had previous brushes with the law said that she checked several police stations to see if he was there.
“I report it to every station, different station and the police did nothing about it. Everyday I running at the station,” Howell told this newspaper.
She said that she even made attempts to place a missing person notice on television but was told that she needed the police permission to do so.
She said that during a visit to the Brickdam Police Station, an officer made several calls to other stations to ascertain if Hinds was in custody.
“The police always leave message; they always keep running for him, arresting him, putting him in the lock-ups for things that he doesn’t know about.
They leave message how much times, telling me that they gon kill him,” Howell told this newspaper.
She identified a policeman from the Brickdam and ranks from a police Quick Reaction Squad as the persons who had made threats to kill her reputed husband.
This was immediately after the GuySuCo payroll robbery.
According to Howell, who is pregnant, Hinds, a father of three was detained about a month after the robbery and was placed on an identification parade but was not picked out.
A police source said that Hinds was shot at during the chase of the bandits who had committed the robbery but managed to escape.
There are reports that he fled to Suriname shortly after.
Howell said that yesterday family members had to stop the authorities from burying the body without their knowledge.
“They know I was running to the police for seven days concerning a missing person; why is it that they wanted to bury someone behind my back without even calling me in to find out if he’s the one?” Howell asked.
Investigators will now have to determine how Hinds died.
The discovery of Hinds’s body is reminiscent of the days of the crime wave when the bodies of several criminal suspects were discovered all over the city and in some cases the backlands of the East Coast of Demerara and the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
