An Adrian Adams double led New Amsterdam United (NAU) to yet another win in the feature game of a double-header on Sunday last, at Burnham Park, when play in the Berbice Football Association/Coca Cola senior league continued.
New Amsterdam blasted their way to a 4-1 win over former champions, West Coast based Monedderlust. In the afternoon’s opening showdown, Cougars made light work of Mahaicony United by inflicting a 6-1 drubbing on their opponents, while the lone game on Saturday, another high scoring encounter, saw Pistons United whipping the inexperienced Scottsburg United, 6-0.
In Sunday’s match, NAU dominated the showdown overall with a brace of goals in each half, the first half ended 2–1 and saw spirited attacks from both teams from the opening whistle.
It was former national Under-16 skipper Shurlone Edwards who sent the winners on their way with a 3rd minute goal, but Monedderlust did not allow that early advantage to shift their focus as they hit back 10 minutes later to equalize through a Gladwin Johnson effort.
But the visitors allowed the host team to restore the advantage with an own goal through a defence error in the 39th minute.
Monedderlust’s defender Brian Henry’s genuine effort of trying to clear the ball under pressure resulted in the ball slipping past the goalkeeper.
NAU decided to inject fresh legs early in the second half and it resulted in the attacking dominance, which they enjoyed allowing Adrian Adams to net his double within a minute of each other, 75th and 76th, as the home side triumphed 4-1.
Earlier, Cougars demolished Mahaicony United 6-1 after a first half cushion of 3-1.
The players hitting the back of the nets for Cougars were Sherwin DeFlorimonte 5th minute, Shaun Sauers and Junior Simmons in the 28th and 29th respectively.
Newt Mahaica, trading his usual goalkeeping gloves to play outside, showed his versatility by pulling one back for Mahaicony 34 minutes on and as it turned out, that was their only success.
Cougars’ second half goals were scored compliments of Horace Roache (45), Kirth Bristol (63) and Ryan Stewart one minute later.
In a lone match at the same venue on Saturday afternoon, the young Pistons United lineup redeemed themselves by thrashing the inexperienced Scottsburg United 6-0.
Javier Gomes (17 & 52) and Orlando Hinds (28 & 38) converted a double each for the victors.
Kellon Felix in the 55th and Eon Farley with a long range bomb from 40 meters out in the 57th minute inking their names on the score sheets.
Matches that were scheduled for the Blairmont #3 ground were not played due to persistent heavy rain fall and have been rescheduled for today and Friday at the same venue.
Today, Brazilla match skills with Rosignol United, while on Friday, Strike Force oppose Real Union. Both matches kick off at 16:00hrs.
