Western Tigers are a no show
Sunburst Camptown defeated Fruta Conquerors 2-1 to cart off the Marlon Hendricks trophy and $80,000, when the finals of the Camptown Football Festival concluded at the Camptown Ground in Campbellville Housing Scheme, Sunday evening last. Fruta Conquerors earned themselves $40,000.
Reshawn Sandiford wasted little time in sending Camptown ahead in the 12th minute. However, his teammates were still rejoicing, when Delon Williams slammed home a scorcher in the 13th minutes to equalize the situation. The goal only served to intensify Camptown’s efforts and their persistence paid off in the 30th minute when Lance Rawlston dribbled past the field and slammed home a humdinger.
The players left the field at half time with the homeboys enjoying the lead. Conquerors valiantly attacked in an effort to equalize the situation, but they were met by strong resistance from the Camptown defence. Twice they effected changes. At first Lester Peters was sent out at the expense of Dominique Hunte, but his presence could not change the fortunes of his team. Trevor Lythcott was then summoned in place of Eon Alleyne. He immediately signalled his intention with a powerful effort to the Camptown goal. On any other night his effort might have paid dividends, but the alertness of custodian Oswald Cornette denied him the opportunity.
The players continued to toil in muddy conditions, which at times slowed up the ball, but try as they might, the Tucville team found it difficult to ‘conquer’ their opponents. A slight shower about half an hour before the final whistle certainly did not help the situation and the final whistle simply intensified the Fruta boys’ gloomy spirits.
The highly anticipated third place playoff between Western Tigers and the Guyana Defence Force was not to be as the Tigers, through the direction of their Manager, Gordon Gilhuys, chose to abandon their chances.
Reports are that Gilhuys had initially protested against the players contesting for the Marlon Hendricks trophy. The former magistrate is contending that while traveling to Barbados Hendricks was intercepted at the Grantley Adam Airport and a later search revealed that he had swallowed an illicit substance.
Gilhuys is adamant that any glorification of Hendricks’ name meant that the organisers were endorsing the act. The organisers apparently did not share this view and refused to recant the decision to name the tournament in honour of the dead footballer. It was for this reason, and as a sign of protest, that Gilhuys retracted his team from the tournament. It is not yet clear whether the Guyana Football Association executives had awarded the $20,000 third prize to the army.
The tournament was organised by the executives of the Camptown Football Club to purchase much needed floodlights to facilitate night matches. Currently, the Club rents this facility from BK International. The Camptown executive would therefore like to extend heartiest gratitude to those firms and individuals that had contributed towards the success of the venture. Contributors include Western Union, Guinness, DeSinco Co, Excel minerals Inc, Pro Signs and Igloo Ice Cream.
Meanwhile, in other football news Uprising and Riddim Squad played to a nil all draw when the two teams clashed in the Trix Under-17 football competition at the Camptown ground on Saturday last. Stephon Dickson netted for Uprising in the 18th minute, while Amis Ramsey scored for the Riddim Squad in the 14th.
Black pearl earned a walkover from Western Tigers, while Santos and the GFC battled to a nil all draw. Alpha United then conceded a defeat to Fruta Conquerors 1-nil off a 12th minute effort of Eon Alleyne.
