– by car driven by unlicenced 16-yr-old
A 47-year old woman from Alexander Village, Greater Georgetown, may be crippled for life after she was struck down by a car driven by a 16-year old unlicenced driver.
Lilowtie Persaud, of 194 Fourth Street, Alexander Village, is now confined to the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital, following the accident which occurred just outside her home around 16:15 hours on Sunday. The 16-year-old driver and the owner of the car are in police custody awaiting their day in court.
A medical report shows that Persaud suffered spinal damage and is paralysed from her shoulders down.
The woman’s brother, Vijai Manohar, told Kaieteur News that he was sitting outside his yard some four feet from the roadway playing dominoes with some friends.
He said that his sister was standing behind him watching him play, when a car that was coming from the western direction suddenly veered out of control.
The car, PEE 4518, missed the domino players and struck Persaud, depositing her in a nearby drain.
Manohar said that the car then uprooted an almond tree before coming to a halt after it crashed into a concrete fence.
“She was behind me and de car miss me and fling she (Persaud) in a gutter,” Manohar recalled.
He said that a neighbour and onlookers picked up the injured woman and rushed her to the hospital, while he and some other persons approached the car in which three young men were.
According to Manohar, the driver of the car, who also resides in Alexander Village, fled the scene of the accident.
The injured woman’s brother told this newspaper that when he approached the driver’s house, his relatives were abusive and it was not until late Sunday night that they turned him over to the police. “De police done hold de owner of de car, who is de boy uncle, and so they had to turn he in,” Manohar said.
He explained that the young man was warned on several occasions about his reckless driving through the busy streets of the village.
He admitted that although many persons knew that the young man was not the holder of a driver’s licence, no report was made to the police.
“I personally warned him about de way he does drive because they gat children dat does deh pon de road. He showed no care and it sad fuh know that it had to take something like this fuh he catch sense,” Manhoar told Kaieteur News.
